Discovering Lecce Baroque: a guide to Lecce's unmissable monuments

Discovering Lecce Baroque: guide to unmissable monuments in Lecce

Lecce, the heart of Salento in Apulia, is world-famous for its Lecce Baroque, a unique architectural style that transforms the historical centre into a true open-air museum. The famous Lecce stone, easily worked and warm in colour, has allowed the creation of façades rich in stuccoes, floral motifs, putti and religious and secular symbols, making Lecce one of the most fascinating destinations for those who love art, history and architecture.

Basilica of Santa Croce: the heart of Lecce Baroque

In the historical centre of Lecce, near Piazza Sant'Oronzo, is the Basilica di Santa Croce, the city's most famous Baroque monument. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries, its façade is a true masterpiece: columns, putti, allegorical figures, animals and floral motifs carved in Lecce stone create a theatrical ensemble that tells stories, symbols and religious devotions.
Construction took place in stages over more than 150 years, involving generations of local artists, and still leaves visitors open-mouthed by the wealth of detail.

Piazza del Duomo and the Cathedral of Lecce

One of the most scenic squares in Italy is undoubtedly Piazza del Duomo, the sacred heart of the city. Here you will find the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Assunta, renovated in Baroque style in the 17th century, the bell tower, an imposing tower that dominates the Lecce skyline, and the Bishop's Palace together with the Seminary Palace, with scenic façades and rich decorations.
The Cathedral has two façades and a slightly unusual position, which prompted architects to create harmonious and surprising Baroque compositions, making the square a true open-air architectural theatre.

Seminary Palace and Baroque Well

In the historical centre of Lecce, near the Piazza Within the cathedral complex, the Palazzo del Seminario is an elegant example of civil Baroque architecture. In the courtyard is the famous Baroque Well or Vera Ovale, finely decorated with leaves, putti and natural symbols. It is not only a functional work, but a small sculptural masterpiece that displays the imagination and exuberance typical of Lecce Baroque.

Church of St. Anne

The Church of Sant'Anna, in the historical centre of Lecce, represents a more sober and elegant Baroque style. The Lecce stone façade is divided into two orders, enriched by niches and statues, with balanced proportions reminiscent of some elements of the nearby Cathedral. This church combines religious devotion and local art, offering a fine example of Lecce Baroque.

Church of Santa Maria della Grazia

Located in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, the Church of Santa Maria della Grazia creates a fascinating contrast between Baroque and Classical antiquity. The elegant façade, punctuated by columns and tympanums, houses typical Counter-Reformation architectural details inside. Its proximity to the Roman Amphitheatre makes this corner of the historical centre one of the most striking for visitors to Lecce.

Other Baroque corners not to be missed

Lecce is full of small Baroque jewels hidden in its streets:

  • Church of St Irene - one of the first great examples of Lecce Baroque, with scenic interiors.
  • Church of St. Matthew - characterised by a concave and dynamic façade, typical of the liveliest Baroque.
  • Marrese Palace, Carmine Church, Alcantarine Church - other examples that complete the Baroque itinerary in the historic centre of Lecce.
